The Reticulated Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata) is one of the coolest oddball freshwater fish you will come across because they look like little stingrays.   Their native habitat are the shallow rivers and streams of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.  The tiger stripe pattern makes the Reticulated Hillstream Loach the most popular and desirable variant in the aquarium hobby.  Not to be mistaken for the spotted patterns of their cousins the Chinese Butterfly Hillstream Loach.

There is quite a bit of conflicting information on the internet as to what kind of care they require and most are just regurgitating what they read or heard from someone else.  We are here to set the record straight based on first hand, direct experience caring for, breeding, and raising Hillstream Loaches.  These are not imported!  They were bred and raised right here in San Diego.

They are currently in tanks with the following parameters:

We did this by mixing 50% dechlorinated San Diego tap water with 50% RODI (or distilled) water.  If your tank parameters are significantly different (but still within the specs listed below) you will need to drip acclimate the fish before adding them to your tank.   This helps to avoid shock and gives their bodies a chance to adjust to the new water.

We want you to be successful in the aquarium hobby and we care for the well-being  of all our fish.  So we want to make sure your tank parameters will align with the needs of the fish.  Keeping water parameters stable is the key.  Please take note of the following:
